What do I want to learn?

A few days ago in are PPP session we were given  five questions to answer;

  1. Why you choose to study on this course?
  2. What I want to learn during the time on this course?
  3. What are my strengths and weaknesses?
  4. What would I like to improve?
  5. Things that inspire me?
  6. What are my fields of interest?

Once given these we then have to give five answers for each questions, gather pictures that relate to these questions and then create a powerpoint presentation for this.

1. Why I choose to study Graphic Design?
I've always had an interest I'n vinyl, magazines, and CD designs as a younger Teenager, I would never purchase any book,CD,Vinyl,Magazine unless I found the graphics/covers pleasing. I was always very interested in Design due to my mum working in a similar area, watching her work from home and seeing what my mum was creating I discovered how much I liked designing.

When I went to college I took a gamble taking a graphics course, as I wasn't sure what it would be like as coming from a school studying 'art' is a completely different. Once i started college i soon found that studying at CCAD was the best gamble that I made, I was introduced to whole new way of Pratically thinking, we had a process where we had to do the following; Research, Experimentation, Development, Creating a final outcome. This method was perfect for me, as I've always been a practical person rather than an exam person, I've also got dyslexia so it takes time to understand a project, this method allows me to think practically.

After college studying Graphic design, I felt even more confident about studying Graphics when it came to choosing a course at uni. I found a love for editorial/ topography and Packaging during college so I knew I wanted to take a Graphics.

When it came to choosing the graphics course at Leeds, I choose it because i like the idea of a smaller class size, visiting other uni's such as Nottingham the class size was huge and i felt you'd have no time for one and ones with the lecturers and it seemed un professional. The leeds course however had smaller classes so you'd have more time with lecturers and space to work in. I felt the leeds course was very sophisticated and business oriented which is what i wanted, i wanted to be able to work in a professional environment and they had very high professional contacts. I liked how it's quite typography based as I love typography, I liked how we study every aspect of type. This course also studied in specific areas such as, Branding, Editorial, Packaging, Advertisings which are all the subjects I'm interested in the most. I also liked how we have to be in uni everyday, because being in uni provokes me to do work and get things done in time.

But the main reason I choose Graphic design at leeds is because, I feel the course will push me and pull me in my strengths and weakness's in design, and it would give me the push to become a better designer. Also designing is a stress relief  for me, it makes me feel better about myself. I also really like the idea of designing a piece of work that impacts on other people to make them feel better about themselves or make them aware of something, i think design is word's in images and the meaning behind every piece of work impacts on everyones daily life.

2. What I want to learn during the time on the course?

My aims on this course is to understand the language of type and it's history. Also  i want to take in professional advice in how to be a better designer, I want to know my strengths and weaknesses, I want to gain knowledge in how to present myself as a Graphic designer, Have a list of design books and magazines, that i read all the time to know a wide range of artists work and gallery. But most of all I want to learn how to be the best I can be In Graphic Design.

3. What are my strengths and weaknesses?

So far at uni I've found I have weaknesses such as; Planning time, budgeting, and from college I found I was not particularly good at Infographics. My strengths are; Packaging, Editorial,Branding, being committed to doing something, getting work done on time.

4. What would I like to improve?

Personally I would like to plan my time better, I find that at the moment I plan to many things in one day, so i'm always stressing out about getting everything done because i've planned it in one day rather than spread out for a few days for a couples hours on a night. I would also improve and make time for extra curricular activities and relaxing time, because at the minute I'm not getting to have tea and I'm falling asleep as late times.

5. Things that inspire me?

Just walking in a street inspires me in design anything you see in daily life can be a piece of art/graphics, theres always a boutique cafe i've walked past and the design is beautiful, or people busking on the street you can make Graphic stories with anything. Books inspire me, looking through different artist's work, in particular Davide Carson  renowned typography designer, I love his layout designs of his type, It made me be experimental with my typography today.

6. What are my fields of interests?

My fields of interest are layout so Magazine Editorial, I love magazine design, i like how you can incorporate typography with it also and how free you are with type when it comes to magazines/books .  But I also really like packaging design and physically making the design for restaurants and cafes.

7. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

I see myself living in Italy or america, working for a big company creating my own design for magazines and packaging, I want to be able to make enough money to be comfortable and stable, I want to have traveled world wide and gained knowledge from other cultures. Also I would like my own small design company/website/business to sell personal designs and private designs for companies. I want to of worked away in a different country for a few months, I also  would want to go to Africa for charity.

Study Task- Timetable

In the past week, we had a lecturer about managing are time outside and inside of uni, telling us how to hit our deadlines and fit in a other curricular activities. We then had to create a timetable to show how we would fir things in, this is my timetable;

We were then told to make lists of are dreams and goals and we had to try figure out if we could fit some of out dreams and goals in my timetable, here is a list of mine:

  • Set up my own Graphic design website - Make it in my relaxing time on night.
  • Create my own design book - Fit it into my weekend time.
  • Go to the gym more - Be quicker getting work done so i have more spare time.
